Ebb and Flow

Funny how situations both good and bad just ebb and flow. Life is like a roller coaster, you have your highs and lows.  Sometimes I feel dizzy and nauseas, but I suck it up and keep moving.  Seems like my anthem has been Kelly Clarkson's "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger".

This week has been a high point. I got a promotion and a raise. Definitely a nice way to start the weekend. I'm trying to get back to running.  I have a physical tomorrow morning.  Since I gave birth last January, I've been on this health kick to be as fit as  possible. I lost 40lbs over the coarse of 6 months.  I took up running, counting calories and even a month working out to Insanity.  I've signed up for monthly races.

Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol run in my family.  Last April while on maternity leave, my dad was diagnosed with renal failure and has been on dialysis since.  That was the turning point for me. Actually that was the icing on the cake.  All my life, I've been a thick girl. I was probably thin for 2.2 seconds in college. I went on some diet pills and lost 50lbs over summer break.  I went from a size 14 to a size 6. Pretty impressive.  But I didn't exercise. I managed to keep the weight off for about a couple of years. Then I met my now husband and well, love happened. Pizza 2-3x a week and it all went downhill (more like uphill) from then.  Almost 10 years of marriage and two kids later, enough is enough on the weight.

I've never really been that person to set those goals for the new year and actually stick to them. Finding myself at almost 200lbs last year, it was my time to finally do something. Seeing my dad go through dialysis 3x a week for the rest of his life is not the future that I see for myself or my family.  So I made the choice to actually, gasp, work hard for it through sweat, hard work and determination.

I started running last April so I'm still a newbie. But I made it a point to sign up for one race a month to keep the motivation.  I'm not the fastest runner, but I do it.  I enjoy the outdoors, listening to music and enjoying the scenery.  This year I'm determined to participate in 9 races to qualify for the 2013 NYC Marathon.  God help me.

I'm sure this weeks highs will only last a few more days or weeks before I hit another low. But until then, I'll enjoy this, embrace it, give thanks to God for the blessings and move on and be strong for what's next to come.
