Work/Life Balance: Does it exist?

Yesterday a colleague of mine who's in grad school asked to interview me for a paper she's writing. The topic was work/life balance.

I've had this conversation a few times before. Does it exist? My answer is Yes and No. Why, you may ask? It's subjective. Some women can have a balance, however I feel that it comes at a cost. Sacrifices will be made. Either you sacrifice your career, spending time/raising your children or your spouse, partner or significant other.

You see, in this complex matrix someone or something will be ranked in order. It all depends on the person. Some may sacrifice their careers to spend time with their kids or as I like to put it, "take the scenic route" before getting back on the highway path that you were originally on. Kids do not stay young forever. They grow up, move out and maybe even start their own families which then leaves you to pursue your dream deferred, or not. Maybe that dream manifested into a new one. Maybe it disappeared. Either way, there will come a time when you're an empty-nester and can fulfill your goals and desires.

There may also a point when relationships are sacrificed throughout the earlier years and now you find yourself getting to know your other half all over again. Some rekindle the bond, some become total strangers and part their separate ways.

Some choose to further their careers while nannies, daycares, au pairs and the best boarding schools that money could buy raise their children. A few may have enough rank to make their demands to include family time. A very select few are able to accomplish this.

You see, There is no right or wrong answer. I was asked if I knew a mom coming into the workplace for the first time, what advice would I give her?  My answer: Do what you think is best for your family dynamic. No two situations are alike and sacrifices will be made.

As a mom to a special needs child I am fortunate to be able to hold down a full time job with excellent benefits, flexibility and a supportive work family. Is it easy? No. Sometimes it balances out as the kids grow and needs change. Then out if nowhere life may throw you a few lemons and you learn to make some damn good lemonade.

Some of you may disagree and that's OK. We are all entitled to our own opinions so if you think you have the secret to work/life balance without any sacrifices, please, by all means share! For me, I want to wake up 20 years from now and know that I still have a great bond with my spouse and children. I want to know that I raised my boys to be smart, independent family men. I want us all to sit over dinner and reminisce on our past adventures. That's my balance.

Peace and blessings.

  1. Great post! Work/life balance is so hard. And some days are better than than others. But Jeanette Kaplun (a woman who I admire very much) once said, "I believe [women] can do it. Just not all alone. And not all at once." I try to go by that.

  2. This post is so on point. You are totally right. Sacrifices have to be made. It is not possible to give 100% to everything at the same time. It can be tough and it is great that you are making it work for you and your family. I will share this one for sure.

  3. Shirley, what a great post!! We recently had a session where someone said Family support was key to our work/life balance. I could not agree more. And for me definition of family is extended family as well (includes close friends that I have had to trust). I agree that sometimes you have to take different routes, sometimes what others may see as a "step back " professionally..but it doesn't last forever. As for balance..I call it a daily balancing act...that's how it works for me, taking it one day at a time.....and realizing that sometimes there is a day where it all falls apart...we start again the next day!
