Smells Like Team Spirit
This week was Team Spirit Week at big kid's school. Each day the kids demonstrated their team spirit in unique ways:
Monday - Crazy Hat day
Tuesday - Blue and White (school colors)
Wednesday - Favorite sports shirt
Thursday - Favorite Character (cartoon or Superhero)
Friday - Inside Out day
Besides having fun, I hope that big kid learned a valuable lesson. I want him to understand that just because he may not be as adept as typical kids his age, it shouldn't deter him from playing a sport he likes. He too, can play - just differently. His school is composed of children with different abilities. The kids on the basketball team also have different levels of abilities - some are ambulatory while others are in wheelchairs. Big kid doesn't need any adaptive equipment to help him walk. Some of his schoolmates do require a little more assistance - but that doesn't stop them from playing sports. They play basketball in wheelchairs. The point is - they PLAY, not like their 'typical' peers but nonetheless play, albeit, differently.
I hope that big kid understands that it's not about limitations. It's about giving things a try, giving it your all and most of all, HAVE FUN! I hope this gives him a little more confidence in his own abilities and encourages him to try new things. The word "can't" is not in our vocabulary at home. We "try our best"and not dismiss something until we try. If it doesn't work out, we move on. At least we can say we tried. I push big kid because I know he is capable. I will fall back when I know he is not.
Big kid had a good time this week at school. His teacher is an amazing person. I am hands off unless I have a specific question for her. I guess since big kid is the new student in her class, she takes the time to do little things like take his picture and text me so that I can see he's having a good day/ time at school. Those are the precious and priceless moments that I cherish. She doesn't have to. She wants to. I feel like we've hit the lotto with this school. For that, I'm forever thankful and grateful. I will support the school any which way I can.

Working as a team with our kids' school is a blessing. Especially when all members on the team get each other. One line you wrote that resonated with me is: "I hope that big kid understands that it's not about limitations. It's about giving things a try, giving it your all and most of all, HAVE FUN! I hope this gives him a little more confidence in his own abilities and encourages him to try new things. "
ReplyDeleteThis is so so true. Angel will be starting a challenger baseball league this summer and I am so excited to see how he does and most of all how much fun he has. Thanks for sharing. Your boys are blessed.
